On Monday, our College community came together to celebrate Bishop Tyrrell Day, a special opportunity to reflect on our shared values, honour our heritage and strengthen the connections that make Bishop Tyrrell Anglican College such a vibrant and supportive community.

We began the day with a whole-school Chapel service filled with joy, reflection and celebration. Our College Chaplain, Reverend Kate, spoke about the significance of Bishop Tyrrell Day, while our K–1 Choir brought smiles to faces across the congregation with a lively performance of ‘This Little Light of Mine’. The Right Reverend Dr Peter Stuart, Bishop of Newcastle, shared an inspiring message about the importance of making not just good choices, but the right choices, and our Year 7 Christian Studies students entertained and informed us with seven fun facts about Bishop Tyrrell.

Throughout the day, students had the chance to spend time with Bishop Peter and learn more about his life, faith and experiences. Our Year 11 student leaders enjoyed an insightful question-and-answer session, exploring topics ranging from leadership and vocation to life beyond school. Year 5 students were equally curious, asking thoughtful questions about Bishop Peter’s role, his journey from England to Australia and what he enjoys doing in his spare time.

One of the day’s highlights was Bishop Peter’s visit to Kindergarten, where he joined students during their InitiaLit literacy lesson, celebrated student achievements through the presentation of Bronze Awards and took part in a fun true-or-false quiz that had everyone engaged and laughing.

The spirit of generosity was also on full display as students from Kindergarten to Year 12 contributed to our annual coin line fundraiser. Together, our community raised $300 for the Indigenous Literacy Foundation. Through the Foundation’s Book Supply program, this donation will provide approximately 300 books to children in remote and rural Indigenous communities across Australia, helping to foster a love of reading and support lifelong learning.

Bishop Tyrrell Day was a wonderful reminder of the values that guide our community: compassion, integrity, justice, faith, courage and wisdom. These values were evident throughout the day in the thoughtful questions asked by students, the generosity shown through our fundraising efforts, and the moments of learning, reflection and celebration shared across the College.

Most importantly, Bishop Tyrrell Day was an opportunity to come together as one community, celebrate our Anglican heritage, and recognise the people, values and traditions that continue to shape life at Bishop Tyrrell Anglican College.
