At Bishop Tyrrell Anglican College, as with all Newcastle Anglican Schools, our approach to teaching and learning is based on ‘The Learning Power Approach’, designed to develop students as confident and capable learners, both inside and outside of school.

As a College, we bring this philosophy to life through the careful cultivation of learner attributes that empower students. These include curiosity, attention, determination, imagination, thinking, socialising, reflection, and organising.

Our guiding principles shape the way we teach, learn and grow, informing both our learning programs and the culture of our College.

The Learning Power Approach

Developed by Guy Claxton, this approach is about helping students become mind-fit for life by teaching them to teach themselves. At the heart of the Learning Power Approach lies our commitment to:

Preparing young people for 21st-century life beyond the classroom.

Developing valuable outcomes for all young people.

Learners are engaged, productive and happy.

Create a culture that supports the development of positive learning dispositions.

Encourage consistent improvement by our Teachers. They reflect on their work and aim to do better.

Focus on kindness, honesty, empathy, curiosity, empathy, critical and creative thinking in all students and staff.

Continuous, explicit and intentional improvement in both teaching and learning that builds and deepens over time.

As students move through each stage of learning, they’ll find different skills are emphasised and built on, resulting in a powerful repertoire and mindset by the time they graduate.

Developing a love of reading is at the heart of our College. Our two libraries provide welcoming spaces where students can read, research, collaborate, and explore new ideas.
