Year 12 student Maddison Elliott will tonight compete in her first event at this year’s Paralympics in Rio.
Maddison will race in the qualifier round of the 400m freestyle at 11pm local time. The final will be at 6.56am tomorrow.
Maddison, who has cerebral palsy, will compete in five solo events in Rio, with the possibility of two relay events.
At 17 years, Maddison is a veteran Paralympian, first competing at the 2012 London Paralympics. She was Australia’s youngest Paralympic medallist at just 13 years old. In London, she won gold in the women’s 4x100 metre freestyle relay, silver in the 50 metre freestyle and bronze in both the 100 metre and 400 metre freestyle events.
This time around, Maddison is chasing an individual gold medal. “To have an individual gold medal around my neck, standing on that podium, with a world record beside my name, it would be just unreal. I’m hoping that happens,” she said.
Maddison has the support of the whole school behind her. “Maddison is an outstanding athlete and student. We are all very proud of her achievements and will be cheering for her tonight,” Principal Mr Peter Moulds said.
“No matter the outcome, she’ll always be a hero in our eyes,” he said.
Maddison will be competing in the following events:
